Disclosed is a method comprising receiving data 635 from a sensor located on a vehicle seatbelt buckle, authenticating the data 665, and based upon the authentication actuating the buckle to release a clip therefrom 660. The data may be biometric data such as a fingerprint. Alternatively it may be data of the pressure applied on the sensors surface. Also disclosed is a method comprising receiving a message 645 associated with an electronic seatbelt buckle from one of a vehicle switch, a mobile device, or a remotely-located server. In response to receiving the message the buckle is actuated to release a clip therefrom 660. Also disclosed is a method comprising determining a vehicle is located at a predetermined destination 640 and in response actuating an electronic seatbelt buckle to release a clip therefrom. Further authorization from a mobile device may be require before the buckle is actuated. These inventions are concerned with childproofing autonomous vehicles. If a child is riding the vehicle alone then a parent cannot ensure that they keep their seatbelt on. By requiring some manner of authorization, or only allowing the seatbelt to be released upon arrival at a destination, this issue is addressed.
